RESEARCH

SPPSPTM SVKM’S NMIMS, Mumbai is devoted to excellence in pharmaceutical education and research. The school strives to impart quality education and training to budding pharmacists to make a global mark in the area of healthcare. The faculty are actively involved in conducting cutting edge multidisciplinary and industry-oriented research in a myriad of areas as mentioned below.

PHARMACEUTICS:

The department of pharmaceutics is actively involved in design and development of both conventional and novel drug delivery systems.

Thrust areas of research include:

  • Scale-up and technology transfer of different dosage forms
  • Nanotechnology based carrier systems
  • Nano-cosmeceuticals
  • Lipid based drug delivery systems
  • Transdermal drug delivery systems
  • Targeted drug delivery
  • Design of controlled release systems
  • Taste masking and buccal drug delivery
  • Studies on the applicability of new excipients

PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Thrust areas of research in this department include:

  • Pharmacological assessment of natural products, herbal active constituents and small molecules in various animal disease models of diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis and peptic ulcer.
  • Pharmacological & molecular studies on cardio protective activity of natural products and herbal active constituents in in vitro and in vivo models of myocardial infarction.
  • Toxicological studies for pharmaceutical industries.

PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY

Principal areas of research include process development of bulk drugs and drug intermediates, synthesis of impurities and metabolites of drugs, lead optimization studies, microwave assisted synthesis of compounds, biochemical synthesis, and resolution of drugs (chemical and enzymatic). Active work is also being carried out in computer aided drug design (structure based drug design and virtual screening).

PHYTOCHEMISTRY

Research in this area revolves around bioactivity guided fractionation of herbal extracts, isolation of active constituents and their structural elucidation, identification and authentication of herbal drugs, and standardization of herbal extracts.

PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS

Research in this area mainly relates to analytical method development and validation, bioanalytical method development, impurity profiling, chiral chromatography, study on immobilization of enzymes, spectroscopic analysis using UV, IR, HPLC, GC, HPTLC and LC-MS/MS.
