15th October 2017
Iodine deficiency though not common in areas like Mumbai, can be a cause of conditions like goitre in hilly or high altitude areas in India. As it is not very common, the awareness relating to this deficiency is also very limited. Thus, the Rx committee of SVKM’S NMIMS SPPSPTM decided to break this barrier and conduct an Iodine Deficiency Awareness Campaign on the 15th of October, 2017.
The volunteers took a 5 am bus to Bhiwandi, an area near Mumbai from which the campsite was about 10 kms away. The volunteers embarked on this mission as soon as they reached, going from area to area, house to house to impart awareness and solve any queries regarding the complications in health due to iodine deficiency, mainly goitre. The volunteers also distributed packets of iodized salt amongst the residents and also spread awareness regarding various other sources of iodine.
In the evening, to make this a little more creatively instructive, the volunteers decided to play cricket with the children of the village. This went on until it was time to leave when the volunteers bid goodbye to the villagers and embarked on the journey back home.
