RED RIBBON- THE AWARENESS RUN

Millions of people all over the world suffer from AIDS, and the potential threat for many millions more to be infected by this sexually transmitted disease is very real.

Many people know about AIDS and how it spreads but even so, the social stigma faced by the people living with this disease is astonishingly high.

Thus, to create awareness, not only about HIV/AIDS, how it does not spread and how its spread can be prevented, but also for an open and accepting society free from the myths and misconceptions about people living with AIDS, the students of SVKM's NMIMS Shobhaben Pratapbhai Patel School of Pharmacy and Technology Management, Mumbai, came together to organize marathon.

The Red Ribbon Run was held by Kshamta, the Social Responsibility Forum and Excalibur, the Sports committee of SPTM on the 20th of December, 2015.The marathon began at 6.45 A.M. with more than 200 participants running for a cause following registrations and face painting.

The run started at Mithibai college, and ended there, after taking a circular route to Juhu circle and back covering 5km run. After the marathon, participants were entertained by a short music piece by Mr. Nishad (member of Excalibur), followed by a talk by one of our volunteers Ms. Ashwariya as well as a member Ms. Sonal of The Humsafar Trust, an organization that works for the LGBT community and a representative Ms. Urmi from the trans-gender community who works the Sanjeevani Care Trust, about AIDS.

The event ended with prize distribution to the winners of the marathon. A certificate, cash prize, a medal and gift vouchers were given to winners and a certificate along with gift vouchers were distributed to participants.

The event was an impactful one and we as a team hope to organize an even larger event next year.

The organizing team headed by Dr. Preeti Sangave, has now been asked to volunteer the MEGA sports Marathon to be organized in the month of Jan 2016 under the banner of SVKM as an appreciation to their organizing skills.
